Created in 1993 by Richard Klein, Surface was based in San Francisco until 2005, when the main offices moved to New York City. The magazine is published 10 times a year.[1] In 1994, Vanity Fair named Surface as one of ten "upstart magazines to watch". Of these ten, only Surface and Visionaire still remained in production 10 years later.
